Profile of Pierre Sebag
Pierre Sebag is the founder and managing director of Sugar K Ltd, providing a range of specialist services for clients in sugar trading and sugar production markets.
- A business graduate from Paris-Dauphine University, Pierre Sebag started his career in New York, USA, at French traders Sucres et Denrees’s main subsidiary Amerop (now known as Sucden), one the top two sugar trading firms in the world at the time, where he ultimately became Executive Vice-President in charge of sugar trading (USA, Canada, Central America, Caribbean and Latin America): 1974-1986
- Recruited by Woodhouse Drake and Carey in London, UK as a main board director and world sugar trading director, he oversaw the London principal office and the various subsidiaries in New York, Hong Kong, Brazil, Dubai and Beijing as well as the extended network of world agents. His duties encompassed both futures and options on the New York and London exchanges, trading physical raw sugar in bulk and white bagged sugar and chartering of vessels, in addition to the coordination of the pre-financing operations with the finance department. The firm's trading emphasis was strategically refocused towards Asia (Thailand, Pakistan, India and China in particular) and the Middle East where great potential was exploited: 1987-1991
- Pierre Sebag created and operated for two years a new sugar trading department in one of the leading grain trading firms of that time Andre & Cie SA in Lausanne, Switzerland; he was, under the Group Managing Director, responsible as Fondé de Pouvoir for worldwide sugar trading; the accent was placed on developing for sugar some of the existing strengths of the Andre Group’s network in Africa, the Middle East and the Former Soviet Union: 1992-1994
- Phibro, the commodity division of investment bank Solomon Brothers, enrolled him to start in its London office a sugar trading desk, reporting to the Westport, Connecticut headquarters. A few months later he was promoted to the position of Sugar Manager, responsible to the President of the Phibro group, with the task of running both the London and Westport sugar desks as well as the various other offices where sugar was present (Beijing, Sao Paulo). This time the strategic focus was placed on sourcing the product in Brazil which was becoming the world's leading sugar exporter and the Middle East for outlets (Dubai mainly): 1994-1998
- Upon the closure worldwide of all the Phibro-Solomon commodities departments (apart from crude oil) when the firm was taken over by insurance group Travelers and then by what became Citigroup, Pierre Sebag founded Sugar K Ltd in March 1998, based in London
